the circle-jerk of society (a fumarole of angst)

"The very cave you are afraid to enter turns out to be the source of what you're looking for." ~ Joseph Campbell

Lasciate ogni speranza ch'entrate
(Abandon hope, all ye who enter here)
~ Inferno, Dante Alighieri

I'm done for. Today, they put up the white picket fence.

This quintessential suburban signpost means I have alas achieved an American dream, which also happened to be one of my worst nightmares. Right, right, I know, I know, I should be more appreciative of all I have.

However, my crass mentality is abetted by my greatest fears—mediocrity and coming full circle. I'm just not cut out to join the circle-jerk of society. But here I am, whacking (the lawn) away.

They say the grass is always greener on the other side, but on the other side of my fence is the sidewalk. And I don't have the option to just walk away.

Now, tell me, how do I allay the angst?

"It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. " ~ Joseph Campbell
