33. the voices came from within

Ghosts do exist.

I experienced this over the weekend when I was listening to a program with my headphones on quite early one morning.

Suddenly, and occasionally, I thought I heard murmurs of others stirring. Thus, I stopped to investigate, and upon hearing only the silence of my self, I came to realize that the voices came from within.

It was my conscience and guilt talking to each other, telling me to heed to the anticipated need of others—even if all around me the world was still quite asleep.

Thus, I realized the spirits that haunt us do exist, but they are internal. They are ourselves and those past lives which are consistently nitpicking at us and telling us what we should do or be doing—how life should unfold for us, and what it is that as social beings we should pursue and perceive as the most important priorities in our life.

"Alas, my brothers, this god whom I created was man-made and madness, like all gods! Man he was, and only a poor specimen of man and ego : out of my own ashes and fire this ghost came to me, and, verily, it did not come to me from beyond. What happened, my brothers? I overcame myself, the sufferer, I carried my own ashes to the mountains; I invented a brighter flame for myself. And behold, then this ghost fled from me. Now it would be suffering for me and agony for the recovered to believe in such ghosts: now it would be suffering for me and humiliation. Thus I speak to the afterworldly.
