little girl (with the blue coat on)

little girl
with the blue coat on
how lovely of you
to rub your fake fur
against my fingers
while they hold on to the cold pole.

bewitched and bewildered,
my soul secretly indulges
in this
inadvertent pleasure—
knowing,
there is nothing i can do
but pine
and wonder
“what if?”
i said something,
an innocent “hello”
a half-sigh and simple “hi”
a hallow reverence of
“why, i like your coat…”
no, no
i’ll just cower
as usual
and gloat,
wondering

what if,
what if?
what if!
