THE WAY OF THE HEART

The word courage is very interesting. It comes from a Latin root cor, which means "heart." So to be courageous means to live with the heart. And weaklings, only weaklings, live with the head; afraid, they create a security of logic around themselves. Fearful, they close every window and door—with theology, concepts, words, theories—and inside these closed doors and windows, they hide.

~ Courage, The Joy of Living Dangerously, osho

i knew a woman once
who, although it was winter
opened her window
and bid me come inside.

"entrez-vous,
warm yourself libeling,
leave your words aside.
cálmate, deja tus pesamientos*,
and all your worries,
as well as worldly aspirations
behind."

i sighed,
yet, knowing, only the bold know
what lies beyond
in the daunting unknown—
i hoisted myself up
and onto the ledge.

and unknowing, willingly,
i went over and into
this moist earth of the enigma,
the fire that was her edge
and there,
i saw her.

reclining and bare.
piqued, i pressed, beseeching,
"when do we begin?"
for i was eager, anxious
for that first lesson.

then offering me her hand
she led mine to her heart,
saying softly, sibilantly,
"it is not a matter of when dear,
but where. for here (pressing firmer)
is where we must start."

"The way of the heart is the way of courage. It is to live in insecurity; it is to live in love, and trust; it is to move in the unknown. It is leaving the past and allowing the future to be. Courage is to move on dangerous paths. Life is dangerous, and only cowards can avoid the danger—but then, they are already dead. A person who is alive, really alive, vitally alive, will always move into the unknown. There is danger there, but he will take the risk. The heart is always ready to the risk, the heart is a gambler." ~ Courage, osho
