THE WAY OF THE HEART
The word courage is very interesting. It comes from a Latin root cor, which means "heart." So to be courageous means to live with the heart. And weaklings, only weaklings, live with the head; afraid, they create a security of logic around themselves. Fearful, they close every window and door—with theology, concepts, words, theories—and inside these closed doors and windows, they hide.
i knew a woman once
who, although it was winter
opened her window
and bid me come inside.
"entrez-vous,
warm yourself libeling,
leave your words aside.

yet, knowing, only the bold know
what lies beyond

i saw her.

piqued, i pressed, beseeching,
"when do we begin?"
for i was eager, anxious
for that first lesson.
then offering me her hand
she led mine to her heart,
saying softly, sibilantly,
"it is not a matter of when dear,
but where. for here (pressing firmer)
is where we must start."
