Tango in the Park0007
Adaptation

On Tuesday, August 1 (2006) my good friend Mia spontaneously invited me to attend an outdoor performance of tango dancing and music at Washington Square Park, which was being held as part of the park’s summer music festival.

Mia: Do you want to go see a tango performance with me tonight in the park?

Me: Um, sure. Actually, on second thought…Yes! Absolutely!

When circumstance and opportunity align, I love the feeling of being able to “Yes!” on a whim, and enthusiastically going with the flow as it presents itself.

It is not the strongest of the species that survive, or the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.
-Charles Darwin-

I adamantly believe that adaptation, resilience, and a willingness to change are keys to being happy. A lot of people are unhappy because they stubbornly stand firm in their beliefs, perspectives, principles and values.

Unfortunately, life isn’t always as congenial and accommodating to our idiosyncrasies, penchants and points of view as we’d all like it to be, and every person we meet has something different to contribute to our experiences. Being able to listen, accommodate, go along and get along with others, instead of obstinately holding on to our own ways, moods and agendas allows one to truly get the most out of this wonderful life.

You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years of trying to get other people interested in you.

Due to inclement weather the concert was taking indoors to a local church across the street from the park.

I was pleasantly surprised by the elegantly exuberant performance by The Cuartetango String Quartet. The group’s artistic director, Leonardo Suarez Paz, not only composed the music, song and dance, he played the lead violin, sang and danced as well throughout the evening.

His energy, grace and charisma were inspiring, to say the least. For after the concert all I wanted to do was to go out and take more pictures, write more words, and to strive to be as creative, talented and excited about life as señor Suarez himself.

Note: The title of this musing is a wink to the movie Adaptation and Charlie Kaufman, the writer of some of my all-time favorite movies including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Human Nature, Being John Malkovich. His screenplays are brilliant! to say the least.
