the lost man chronicles
create your own .76

Creation is more important than recreation. In other words, over our lifetime the will to create should supercede the desire to consume, for the former fulfills, and the latter only fills.

By the age when we are conscious of our dreams and understand cause and effect, we are well prepped to make, rather than simply intake. Albeit, erudition enhances and hones our ability to express ourselves, the study of life itself and any existential experience are equally, if not more important and sufficient sources of inspiration.

One regal writer writes that the aspiring writer must read as much as she writes. At first, I'll confess, I was sold obsequiously. But after an empirical test of this imperial theory, I profess to believe otherwise. One need not read as much as she writes in order to write well.

Perhaps, if one desires commercial success, then yes, one must certainly listen attentively to what sells best to the crowd. Yet, I will say again out loud that ultimately such pandering is much less meaningful than creating something original.

Inspiration is all around you. It lies in the gurgle of a quiet brook, in his irreverent look, in Her wile, as well as in the music of the way She moves. And it behooves us to capture all that we open and push our selves to see, to be and sense readily as we co-create.

So, as long as you have a choice—create rather than oscillate between others' creations. You'll find no other elation greater than that which you call your own.

"Dying," Morrie suddenly said, "is only one thing to be sad over, Mitch. Living unhappily is something else. So many of the people who come to visit me are unhappy."

Why?

"Well, for one thing, the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. We're teaching the wrong things. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it. Create your own. Most people can't do it. They're more unhappy than me—even in my current condition."
