25 More Lessons (I've) Learned
44. Do It Daily

It’s the same advice writers get, you must keep at your craft daily. Even if what you write is shite or what you shoot is shit—keep it up, keep it up!

Several regions of our brain are involved when we take photos, ranging from the limbic system (particularly the amagydala) which prompts us into action via emotional stimuli; our occipital lobe which is responsible for sight and image processing; and our frontal lobe which takes care of our "executive" cognitive functions, as well as motor skills like eye movement and orientation. Together these and other functions of our brains process the stimuli, the context, the rigueur and the reasoning by which we take our pictures.

Hence, there is a great need to exercise all these skills, for they will only function well when you need them if they are prepared to work well together at a moment’s notice.

Linguists like to lambaste foreign language students with “use it or lose it.” This adage can be readily applied to most skills and crafts, for the truly agile dilly and dally at their avocation daily. This is why for some of the more passionate amongst us, a picture a day keep us alive! and rightly aware of the beauty of our surroundings.
