25 Points of Creativity
19. Just Do It!

Stop wishing you were creative! Gosh darn it!

Even if you have no concept in mind, no frame of reference, no orientation, no point of inspiration, no anything that makes you feel that you are acting in the name of creativity just whip out the tools which you usually use to create and draw! scrawl! snap! doodle, scribble and scream if you have to! Even random movements that mock your mode of creativity will at least get you one step closer to where you’re yearning to be.

And don’t worry about what it means or what it takes or if your work will be significant, worthy of your effort, or liked by others. Creativity is about having fun with your work, it is about being playful. Just have fun with your work and feel free to produce crap if you have to.

Even creative geniuses create crap, and quite often will do so on purpose, if only to get the juices flowing, if only because they are well aware that creativity requires practice, practice, practice, and the artist always has to begin somewhere to get anywhere worth getting to.

And sometimes they just create to appease, to simply satisfy the demands of others who indiscriminately pine for their work regardless of its true merit:

“...It always reminds me of the story about the woman who approached Picasso in a restaurant, asked him to scribble something on a napkin, and said she would be happy to pay whatever he felt it was worth. Picasso complied and then said, “That will be $10, 000.” “But you did that in thirty seconds,” the astonished woman replied. “No,” Picasso said. “It has taken me forty years to do that.” ~ Mark H. McCormack, What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School
